The best ice cream parlors in Rome. In this heat what’s the best thing to do than to eat an ice cream? After a walk for a refreshing break, but also as a snack or after dinner, ice cream is now the best choice. And in Rome there is no shortage of strictly handcrafted ice cream shops. We go from more traditional tastes to savory ones and even combined with gourmet dishes, but at the base of all there is always a great attention to raw materials. Here is our updated list with the best ice cream parlors in the capital.

IN TRASTEVERE….

GIUFFRE’ (****)

Viale Trastevere 255, 00153 Roma. – Tel. +39 06 5899616
Giuffrè was born as an ice cream parlor behind the Trastevere station. Linked to tradition, at the same time it also offers a modern ice cream with particular flavors such as the Trasteverino with salt

biscuits and gianduia or the hazelnut-based Porta Portese with toasted almonds drowned in gianduia. We then move on to the Portonovo caramel chocolate variegated with salted and caramelized peanut powder and the Ricotta manu with honey ricotta, coffee powder, praline dried fruit and Amalfi lemon zest. Space also for the more classic tastes with various types of chocolate, the fruit proposals all based on water, ideal for the lactose intolerant. In all, there are around 30 flavors in rotation and the wafers are also very interesting, filled with melted dark, milk and white chocolate.

FIORDILUNA (*****)

Via della Lungaretta, 96, Roma. – Tel. +39 06 64561314
In the heart of Trastevere, Aldo and Fabio Pasquarella have been promoting their homemade ice cream for thirty years. A background of studies which, from physics and chemistry, have been directly

applied to freezing, to obtain an ice cream with absolute creaminess. Now the baton has passed to Eugenio Morrone, no synthetic additives and a line of ice cream with no added sugar for all his tastes. Some creams are prepared with donkey milk, which makes the ice cream lighter and more digestible. Try the fig cream, the duet, a mix of Bronte pistachios and IGP Piedmontese hazelnuts, gran cru chocolates and seasonal fruit.

FATA MORGANA (****)

Via Roma Libera 11, Roma –  Tel. 06 5803615

Fatamorgana is a safe haven for lovers of natural ice cream. The mission of the creator Maria Agnese

Spagnuolo is to create an ice cream with simple ingredients but with unique combinations and creative tastes. Beautiful in their colors and names reminiscent of magic potions. Thumbelina milk, violet liqueur, rosebuds, blueberry sauce, butter & sage flowers with hazelnuts and Crema Agnese, with double caramel and Maldon salt. And then again Snow White, based on fiordilatte with Tahitian vanilla, raspberry coulis and chunks of Fuji apple, Pere bella Héléne, Baklava (cream of Turkish origin), Banana with sesame crunchy. Not least the section dedicated to fruit, also declined in an original way, from the simplest flavors prepared with seasonal fruit to the more complex and “risky” ones.

OTALEG! (****)

Via di S. Cosimato 14/a, Roma. Tel. +39 338 6515450

An open laboratory where the protagonist is the technique used for freezing the ice cream. Made with the Cattabriga, an ancient tool which, thanks to a particularly slow process, makes the ice

cream more compact. Whimsical tastes between creams and savory experiments make Marco Radicioni’s ice cream one of the most interesting in Rome. And therefore we find the particular Cacio e pepe and Gorgonzola among the savory dishes but also the classics such as the Piedmontese hazelnut and the Pizzuta d’Avola almond. The “crunchy” flavors are also interesting, including Gianduia 3.0, with hazelnut chocolate, dark chocolate pieces and crunchy hazelnuts, Pistachio squared, with whole pistachios to bite into and the total Crunchy, fiordilatte base with crunchy dried fruit, sesame and honey.

IN THE CENTER….

GIOLITTI (*****)

Via Uffici del Vicario, 40 (Pantheon), 00144 Roma – Tel. +39 06 699 1243
It is not possible to visit Rome and not enter the Giolitti Gelateria, where of course you can enjoy a superb ice cream. Certainly the Romans did not invent ice cream and in itself it is not a Roman

gastronomic specialty but at Gelateria Giolitti, since 1890, ice cream is a family artisan tradition. Gelateria Giolitti in Rome was started by Giuseppe and Bernardina Giolitti, initially as a dairy where local milk was sold. It becomes the dairy of the Royal House, other places arise and the confectionery tradition begins from nothing. The end of the war favored the development of the Giolitti Pastry Gelato which rapidly developed the art of ice cream making itself one of the best ice cream parlors in Rome. The room of the Giolitti Gelateria is large and furnished in liberty and decò style, very elegant, with tables inside and outside in wood and marble. The furnishings are original from the 1930s with a molded wooden counter. Obviously you go for ice cream, among the tastes you absolutely must try: zabaglione, dark chocolate, fig taste and dried fruit taste.

GUNTER GELATO ITALIANO (****)

Via Dei Pettinari 43 (Campo de Fiori), 00186 Roma – Tel. +39 349 144 7958

Günter Rohregger, from ski instructor to master of the art of ice cream. Having moved from Bolzano to Rome, he opened his first store in 2012. Directly from the Dolomites he brings Plose water which is the

basis for his fruit preparations. Here the flavors offered change according to the seasonality of the products. Try the chocolates, from the single origin to the one with Grand Marnier, up to the combination of chocolate and gorgonzola. The proposal also includes classics such as Gianduiotto Torinese, Mediterranean Pistachio and sorbets as regards fruit flavours. Worth mentioning is the very special Pino Mugo, based on microfiltered organic milk, fresh cream and mountain pine essential oil.

GELATERIA DEL TEATRO (****)

Via Dei Coronari 65/66 (Piazza Navona), 00186 Roma Tel. +39 06 4547 4880

A new beginning for the ice cream parlor overlooking via dei Coronari, which offers a creamy product,

with a decisive taste and careful to enhance the raw material. The creams are exquisite, from zabaglione with Zibibbo di Pantelleria to Avola almonds, the fruit sorbets are also fresh and convincing, such as Amalfi lemon or Terracina strawberry. Try the Old Rome, a tribute to the Jewish ghetto, with ricotta, sour cherries and butter crumble.

FRIGIDARIUM (*****)

Via del Governo Vecchio, 112 (Piazza Navona), 00186 Roma – Tel. +39 334 995 1184

In the heart of the city of Rome, a few steps from the wonderful Piazza Navona, Frigidarium is a small but delicious family-run artisan ice cream shop. Tastes often and willingly vary, and they range from the most

particular, such as saffron and snuff-box peach, to the great classics such as cream, chocolate and pistachio. Their top seller, which takes its name from the place itself, Frigidarium, is highly recommended; it is a delicious mix of cream, chocolate and Pan di Stelle biscuits. Once you have chosen the flavors to put in the cone or cup, you can cover everything with cream or – recommended choice! – from a delicious coating of tempered chocolate.

IL GELATO DI SAN CRISPINO (****)

Via della Panetteria, 42 (Fontana di Trevi), 00187 Roma Italia Tel. +39 06 679 3924

The empire of meringue (present in hazelnut, caramel and chocolate flavours), is located in a delightful little square in front of the Rococo church of Santa Maria Maddalena. The basic cornerstones are the

great attention to the raw material and the re-education to the taste of the genuine. Creams are clearly ahead of fruit, both in numbers and in fame; therefore I mention caramel meringue, special with its music of “crackling” grains, testa di moro (chocolate sorbet), surprisingly creamy despite the absence of milk and last but not least the wild orange sorbet, with a particular flavor but pleasant and fresh. The prices are a bit high but justified by the quality of the raw materials. Rejoice for the arrival of cones (banned in the past), also available in the gluten-free variant.

IN ST. PETER….

GELATERIA DEI GRACCHI (****)

Via Dei Gracchi 272, 00192 Roma – Tel. +39 06 321 6668

The story of Alberto Manassei is very particular. A former luthier of Sardinian origin, in 1999 he arrived in the Prati district of Rome from San Teodoro where he opened his first ice cream shop. Today there are

four outlets and the offer is that of a simple ice cream, made in the old-fashioned way. Most of the flavors are without frills, just to bring out the quality of the raw material. Among all, the Pistachio of Bronte and the Hazelnut of Canepina stand out. However, there are also some more refined pairings such as pear with caramel or the very personal one with apple and mint.

NEVE DI LATTE (****)

Via Federico Cesi 1 angolo Piazza Cavour, 00193 Roma – Tel. +39 06 321 5744

The owners Sabatino Baldassari and Roberto Tulli have focused on the excellent product but also on the very beautiful and elegant premises (two stores). Simone Romano is the master ice cream maker who

starts from raw materials such as biodynamic milk from Upper Bavaria, high mountain water, organic eggs, to continue with exclusive DOP and DOC certified ingredients. So here are flavors such as Pisa pine nuts, milk and cinnamon cream, sorbets with water only including fig sorbet, wild strawberries, pineapple and basil, Karcadè sorbet and lemon and thyme. Finally, mention should be made of the selection of chocolates: Abinao dark chocolate 85% with orange, Amedei chocolate 70%, Domori Sur del Lago chocolate 100%.
